Asocial vs. Antisocial

Nowadays, the so-called ‘Cyberculture’ is taking over the daily lives of people in first-world countries. Nobody can separate their real life and virtual or cyber life anymore, meaning that the Internet and especially social media are now taking over our lifestyles.

Can we talk about an Internet addiction already?

The saying “The one who is furthest to you, is your closest; the one closest to you, is the furthest” can be interpreted in this sense that today, people may neglect their real-world friends in order to communicate virtually to their cyber-friends. Therefore, a friend who is sitting next to you cannot communicate with you while you communicate with someone virtually on your gadget via for example Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook, or Twitter.

To define ‘being asocial’ means lacking in communicating with a counter part for example while being online. Furthermore, ‘being anti social’ aims at being rude and harmful to another person verbally.

Being asocial while communicating with another person online rather than communicating with the person who is siting next to you is anti social. However, if a person is being verbally anti social to their opposite, it is impossible to be asocial because two-way communication is in practice.
